The preparation

This project has its origins in the cultural initiatives of ASEM (the Asia-Europe Meeting) through its executive arm, ASEF (the Asia-Europe Foundation), and ASEMUS (the Asia-Europe Museums Network). The proposed exhibition has therefore been from the outset an expression of a broader, inter-governmental rapprochement involving museums from many states and potentially vast audiences.

The travelling exhibition project has already a significant track-record of bringing colleagues together in productive teamwork. It has been developed from an initial meeting in Leiden (April 2002), followed by others, where possible alternating between Asia and Europe, in Shanghai (September 2003), London (January 2004), Singapore (March 2004), Lisbon (June 2004), Osaka (October 2004), Lisbon (March 2005), London (July 2005) and Stockholm (January 2006).

The composition of the project team has varied over the three years, but with a consistent representation at meetings being from London (British Museum), Leiden (Rijksmuseum voor Volkenkunde) and Osaka (National Museum of Ethnology).

In all there are museums from 18 countries in Asia and Europe that participate by either being members of the project team, intend to be hosting venues or supplying content for the exhibition.
