Person

People announce their individuality as social persons through performing a unique combination of roles in distinctive ways. In some circumstances, personalised portraits are produced as their agents, but the portrait usually conveys at least a hint of their role or status too.

Such portraits may serve the interests of the subject, artist, sponsor, owner or user. Capturing how someone looks is a skilled and mysterious enterprise, but it is always negotiated between artist, subject and beholder. As individuals also with reputations to advance, artists transcend their role as recorders of others to give a portrait a style of their own.

A convincing likeness has to convince those whose ideas of such things have been shaped by conventions, and such conventions vary from one society or time-fame to another. The visual likeness of a person individualises the representation of roles without necessarily sharing modernist claims to capture character.
