Posing questions: Being and image in Asia and Europe The ASEMUS travelling exhibition in London

 

This exhibition looks sceptically at representations or surrogates of people, using examples from Asia and Europe. It is laid out in four sections, each introduced by a text panel in portrait format:        □ AGENT          □ ROLE          □ PERSON             □ MIND As their agent, an object or image extends the social influence of its makers or users. This is a complex, often mysterious, operation. Some portraits represent their subjects’ role or status. Others, so-called ‘true portraits’, focus on their personal appearance.   A portrait can be an especially powerful agent when the appearance of the subject it records is treated as a sign of some inner quality of mind or character.   This idea is explored further on panels in landscape format and in more detail here on the VCM: Optical character recognition?
