Why this is a
Masterpiece

These objects are used in the ritual to pray for having a baby quickly and giving birth safely. They are special and meaningful for its owners.

History of the Object
For almost all ethnicities in Vietnam it is important to have children after marriage. These are objects that Mrs. Mua Y Dia used in the ritual to pray for having a baby quickly and giving birth safely. When she was 19, she gave birth but the baby died because he was born too early. Her husband’s family asked Hoang A Quy, a ritual master, for help and he advised the young couple to ask for metal threads made of wire from two fertile families of two different lineages. A necklace was made from these threads. The ritual for a ‘child request’ goes from 9pm to 2am. The offerings are a pig’s head, a bracelet, a rooster, two hens and a little dog. After the ceremony the ritual master put the necklace around her neck and said it must be left there. Afterwards she became pregnant twice but lost the children. Her family spoke to the ritual master again. He asked for a silver thread from her family to make three bracelets for her wrists and ankle. She has three sons today.
