Why this is a
Masterpiece

This is a precious object which is only used on special occasions and to worship the God Giang.

History of the Object
Kăn Cường made this skirt when she was 20. It was woven of natural cotton. After that, it was dyed in different colors from vegetation in the forest; black from the Arum tree leaves, red from the brown tuber and yellow from the Arac tree roots. She sits on the floor, one part of the loom is fixed around her back, the other end is held by her feet to stretch the thread. She created patterns on its body and the lead beads on the bottom of the skirt are strung on a thread of the weft before weaving. She recovered them from her mother’s used skirt. Her mother told her that lead beads are heated in earthen pots and a sharpened bamboo stick is used to transfer it into cold water. They had only one lead bead, so that they had to do this work to make enough beads for the skirt. Women should not often cook the lead beads because it affects the eyes and the fumes are very poisonous. After she finished weaving the cloth, she folded it in two; the length widens the skirt, and the width makes the dress longer. It took her a day to sew the skirt and she only wears it on special occasions and to worship the God Giang. She has used the skirt 25 times, at least once a year.
