This "Patola" called drapery has its origin in India and was used as means of payment in former times. The Portuguese brought these draperies to the Moluccas in the 15th century. They used them as gift for the rulers of the islands and in particular as means of exchange for cloves and nutmeg. This "Basta" called drapery has its origin in India and was used as means of payment in the past. The Portuguese brought these draperies to the Moluccas in the 15th century. They used them as gift for the rulers of the Maluku islands and in particular as means of exchange for cloves and nutmeg. In the old times only peers possessed such textiles.
