The sculpture was made by the School of Zanabazar. It is not only a beautiful and intricate masterpiece, but is unique for the fact that it depicts the master himself.
History of the Object
Zanabazar (1635- 1723) was the first Bogd Javzandamba Khutagt of Mongolia. He was also a philosopher, statesman, painter, and sculptor - an overall polymath. He founded the Mongolian School of Sculpture, which was later named after him. He was also the leading figure of Mongolian and Buddhist Art during the 17th-18th centuries.
The idol was part of the Bogd Khaan's personal belongings and was later registered as a part of the Bogd Khaan Palace Museum's Permanent Collection 1926.
