The Green Tara Idol was created by G. Zanabazar, who was not only the 1st Bogd Javzandamba Khutagt, a direct descendant of Chinggis Khaan, but a skilled polymath who lived during the 17th-18th centuries and was the founder of the Mongolian school of sculpting, which is known today as the Zanabazar School. The Green Tara, made using the bronze casting technique and gilt gold, is regarded as one of Zanabazar's finest creations and is registered as a Priceless Item of Mongolian Culture and Heritage.

History of the Object
The Green Tara is one of the most important of the 21 Taras in Buddhism and is worshipped as the "Mother of Buddhas", as a "Saviouress", and for her compassion. She is regarded by Mongolians to possess "all the finest qualities of womanhood".

The sculpture has always been part of the Bogd Khaan Palace Museum collection. However, it is said (unverified) that the Academician Ts. Damdinsuren brought the idol from the Amarbaysgalant monastery in 1930.
