Received her BA in ancient art and archaeology of South and Southeast Asia at the Faculty of Archaeology, Silpakorn University, Bangkok, in 1963. Obtained her MA in Indo-Iranian languages and cultures at the University of Amsterdam in 1969, and her Ph.D at the Leiden University in Netherlands in 1984. Has had a long career as lecturer and senior lecturer at the Institute of South Asian Archaeology, University of Amsterdam, and as guest lecturer at Silpakorn University, Bangkok. She worked as curator of the department of South and Mainland Southeast Asia, and as specialist curator for the Buddhist and Hindu collection of Indonesia at the National Museum of Ethnology, Leiden, from 1994-2007.
Her special fields of study and expertise cover Buddhist iconography, art and culture of Central Asia, the Himalaya countries, South and Southeast Asia.
