Bengali master

 

Bengali master artist Nemai Chandra Pal (b. 1934) painting the eyes of the figure of the Hindu goddess Durga in the Great Court of the British Museum. 2006 Photograph © Trustees of the British Museum AN 157336001 Photographer Kevin Lovelock.

This photograph was taken on 16 September 2006, during the Chakshudan ritual of the annual Durga puja, or worship/celebration. At the moment when her pupils are painted, the goddess comes to life.
