'I am a figurative realist painter and predominantly specialise in portraiture. I work in a highly detailed, intensely realistic manner and aim for an absolutely pure and objective likeness. Specific environments and narrative objects are often extremely important ingredients to my portraits as they can help to reflect and reinforce the sitters identity. I seek to convey people in the most understanding, intimate and sympathetic way that I can.’ (Artist’s website).
‘I don't really like to give too much of my interpretation, I prefer to leave it to the viewer but I do think it's interesting to know exactly what the objects are’ (Andrew Tift, personal communication, December 2009).
According to Tony Benn (personal communication, January 2010), Andrew Tift suggested rearranging things that were already in the room, to serve as a more comprehensive reminder of the sitter’s life in politics. A photograph was taken and the artist worked from that, augmented by a few further sittings. The subject was pleased to report how popular the picture has been. |
