Saint Paul

Some Christians treat certain religious images as if they were alive. On the evening of 10 February, the last in the annual Feast of Saint Paul in Valletta, the wooden figure of the saint is carried through the city and occasionally manoeuvred to look down side streets.   This photograph shows the statue just before it re-enters its ‘home’ church at the euphoric climax of the celebrations. Who is waving, and who is waving back?
