The Chiang Mai National Museum is the main regional museum of the North of Thailand. The Fine Arts Department has assigned this museum to be the centre of education and preservation of the art and culture of Chiang Mai and upper northern Thailand - the old Lanna Kingdom. Their Majesties the King and Queen graciously presided over the opening of the museum on 6 February 1973. The museum is designed as a Thai-style building with a traditional Lanna style rooftop. The museum was renovated in 1996 to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of his Majesty the King's accession to the Throne and the 700th anniversary of the establishment of Chiang Mai. The museum building was expanded to its original full plan; the permanent exhibition was updated with new displays; and additional information was enhanced with new technology.
