Information

The Museum Kebangkitan Nasional (National Awakening Museum) is a Historical Museum with mostly photographs and some objects that relate to the National Movement Indonesia. The Museum complex is The Awakening National Building, that is preserved by the Indonesian Republic Conbstitution no. 5 of 1992. The building was finished in 1901 and became the STOVIA (School Tot Opleiding Van Inlandsche Artsen, Medical College for Native Physicians). It was a boarding school, where students stayed until they finished their studies. The historical importance lies in the fact that the first Indonesian Student's Movement, Boedi Oetomo was functioning in the STOVIA. Boedi Oetomo is considered the first Indonesian Association that contributed to the national consciousness. In 1920 the STOVIA moved out, because the building no longer suited its needs. In 1925 a high school started in the building and this lasted until 1942 with the Japanese occupation. After Independence, people from Ambon inhabited the premises from 1945-1973. In 1973 the Indonesian Government declared it a milestone building for the National Movement and started the restoration. In 1974 President Soeharto opened the Gedung Kebangkitan Nasional, the building of National Awakening.
