Shandong Museum, which was founded in 1954, is the first large-scale integrated provincial topographic museum after the foundation of the People’s Republic of China. Being the center of collection of culture relics from the whole province, it has a collection of 110 thousand historical relics and 8,000 natural species, among which 1,338 items are of first-class cultural relics, and 120 thousand books. The collection of Shandong Museum ranks the seventh in the whole nation, and the collection of first-class cultural relics ranks the fourth. Most of the collections are either excavated in Shandong or treasures handed down from ancient times. Its highlights of historical relics include ceramics, bronzes, oracles, bamboo slips, seals, Han dynasties’ pictorial stones, paintings and calligraphies, and rare books, all of which are of typical Shandong style. The construction of the new Shandong Museum, which implements the strategy to build a economically and culturally strong province advocated by the provincial party committee and provincial government of Shandong, started officially in December 29th, 2007. The new site is located in the downtown of eastern area of Jinan city. The new Shandong Museum covers a total area of 230 Mu. The main building area is of 80 thousand square meters in size, with the total investment of 120 million RMB. It aims to build a large-scale integrated museum which is of internationally first-class standard, of typical Qi-lu culture, of rich Shandong cultural history, and of modern concept and traditional style. Shandong Museum, which is a combination of collection, research and social education, is rich in its collections. It aims to display the splendid ancient culture of Shandong Peninsula, to propagate the traditional culture and to progress the education in patriotism. It is said that Shandong Museum is the window to display Qi-lu’s long historical culture. With the steady progress in economy and culture of Shandong, Shandong Museum will play a more important role, having a much brighter future.
