Information

The Choijin Lama Temple Museum is a unique architectural masterpiece with invaluable cultural, religious and historical significance. It was constructed during 1904-08 by Mongolian architects and 300 labourers in honour of the influential lama, Luvsanhaidav. The brother of the eighth Bogd Khan, Choijin Lama Luvsanhaidav was Mongolia’s state oracle, regularly entering states of trance to commune with Buddhist deities. The Temple functioned as an active monastery for Choijin Lama and the forty highest-ranked lamas until 1938 when religious activity was banned under the Mongolian socialist government. One of the few surviving Buddhist temples from that time, the monastery was converted into a museum in 1942 and opened to the public in 1962. An elaborate ensemble of Buddhist architecture that blends Tibetan, Chinese and Mongolian styles, the Choijin Lama Temple Museum is composed of two-tiered pagodas featuring up-turned roofs and zoomorphic imagery. There are five arched gates and six temples: Temple of Maharaja; Main Temple, Zankhan Temple; Zuu Temple; Temple of Yadam; and Temple of Peacefulness. The Museum preserves more than 6000 cultural heritage items, dating from the 17th to 20th centuries, attracting significant research interest. Many of these objects were created by master artisans and include gilded sculptures; paintings; wood carvings; silk appliqué; embroidery; and paper-mâché masks.
