The museum is part of the three Saxonian State Collections of Ethnography (Staatliche Ethnographische Sammlungen Sachsen) with one of the biggest ethnographic collections in the world. Actually its permanent exhibition can be seen in Leipzig on more than 4000 sm. In Dresden the Museum für Völkerkunde Dresden has special exhibitions at the Das Japanische Palais. In Herrnhut the Völkerkundemuseum shows the collections about the Moravian missionary activities of the last two centuries in another permanent exposition.
