It is attached to the Library of The Academic Gymnasium in Toruń. Established in 1594, "the chamber of curiosities" called Musaeum was founded. It can be assumed that was the beginning of the completion of the museal collections of Toruń. In Toruń during the second half of the nineteenth century two academic societies were arranged and close to them was a museum already regularly collecting exhibits, which became the base of contemporary collections. The first one- German Coppernicus Verein für Wissenschaft und Kunst, placed collections in the Old Town Hall and organized the Städtisches Museum, opened in 1861. Next, the Polish Academic Society in Toruń opened its Museum in 1876. After incorporating Toruń into the revived Poland in 1920 , the Town Museum collecting exhibits of regional character was arranged. At the beginning of German occupation, which lasted in Toruń from 4.9.1939 till 31.I.1945, Polish exhibitions were closed down and during the final military actions part of the most valuable collections was moved away. After the war some of them were successfully retrieved and the Museum resumed its activity, passing subsequent reorganizations (in 1950 - Pomeranian Museum in Toruń; 1955- Museum in Toruń; 1965- The District Museum in Toruń). During the 1970s it was added to the historical-artistic list of museums of special significance and in 1998 it was entered into the Museums' Register of The Ministry of Culture and Art. Since 1999 The District Museum in Toruń has been submitted to the local government of Toruń District. The collections are elaborated by the staff of substantial departments: Archaeology, History, Nicolaus Copernicus Museum and Polish and European Art. Besides the units mentioned above the Department of Cataloguing and Museal Specification, the Research and Educational Department, the Department of Preservation and the Reference Library also work within the Museum structure. At present a new Department of Outer European Cultures is in development. MANAGING BOARD of THE DISTRICT MUSEUM in TORUŃ: Dr.Marek Rubnikowicz (managing director), Manager, Bogusław Uziembło (assistant manager).
