Information

The National Museum of Singapore was originally established in 1887 as the Raffles Library and Museum. It had an extensive Southeast Asian zoological and ethnographic collection prior to World War II and was a centre of research, frequently visited by scholars conducting fieldwork in Southeast Asia. In 1969, its focus was altered and it was renamed the National Museum. The zoological collections were deposited at the Biological Department of the University of Malaya (which later formed the basis of the current Raffles Museum of Biodiversity Research), or repatriated to national museums in former British colonies such as India and Malaysia. The new National Museum functioned with the remaining archaeological, ethnographic and art collections. The National Heritage Board was established in 1993. It was tasked with developing colonial-era public buildings into a series of new museums at which the collections of the National Museum could be displayed. Consequently, Singapore Art Museum opened with the art collection, the Asian Civilizations Museum with the ethnographic collection, and the history collection with the Singapore History Museum which occupied the National Museum building. The Singapore History Museum closed and underwent major renovations, including the building of an extension between 2003 and 2006, and was renamed National Museum of Singapore. The Museum’s collection is dedicated towards the historical and contemporary political, social, and economic life of Singapore.
