Why this is a
Masterpiece

Qalamkar was often made of two clothes sewn in the center, its composition resembling the pattern of carpet, that is the central field , filled with a composition with a subject matter, and border. Block printed decoration was created by sequential superimposition of phytogenic dyes in separate imprints. This wall-hanging is based on the story of Nizami’s poem “Seven Beauties”. When Bakhram Gur, son of the Persian ruler Yazdigerd, became the shakh, he built seven palaces of different colour for princesses from different countries. Each palace was dedicated to one of the seven planets, whose color determined also that of the palace. The scene depicted on the qalamkar represents the shakh visiting Indian princess. Edging of several bands with floral design surrounds the composition. The painting is made predominantly in red and blue keys. The craftsman employs blue colour associated with darkness of night extensively.
