Why this is a
Masterpiece

The album holds 140 black-and-white photographs from places visited between 1907 and 1909 by Commissary Officer Viktor Kristan during his travels to Eastern Asia on board the Austro-Hungarian warship Leopard. The majority of the photos were taken in China and Japan, the most valuable among them being the ones depicting the natives’ way of life. The album also contains invitations to various receptions and events, personal cards, menus and programs of events, as well as short texts in Japanese calligraphy, saved by Viktor Kristan in remembrance of his travels.

History of the Object
The article originates from the legacy of Viktor Kristan, Commissary Officer in the Austro-Hungarian Navy, born in 1876 at Šentvid pri Stični (modern-day Slovenia). He graduated from the Military Academy in Vienna and in 1896 joined the Austro-Hungarian Navy. As Commissary Officer he served on board the Navy’s warship Leopard, with which he travelled to Eastern Asia between 1907 and 1909. He brought postcards from China, Japan, Korea and other places visited by the boat and deposited them in the photo album entitled S. M. S. »Leopard« 15. IX. 1907 – 18. IV. 1909. After his death in 1947, the album was kept, together with his legacy, by his heirs. In 2013, it was bought from them by the Maritime Museum “Sergej Mašera” Piran.
