Masterpiece

The monument gained worldwide fame thanks to graves of nomadic elite that were found in Berel barrow and highly artistic items made in a special way, typical to the art of early nomads, the so-called animal style. Here, the formation of the lense of froze in some cases, served to preserve the clothing, horse gear, items made of wood and textile, wooden utensils, leather items and felt found at the barrow.

History of the Object
Berel barrow is located in the picturesque valley of the Kazakh Altai, where an international archaeological expedition was led by Z. Samashev from 1997 to 1999. By the research group, a royal burial ground which included the bodies of king, queen and thirteen horses was discovered. Four horses were in full ceremonial attire. Belts of horse harness, saddles were decorated in the tradition of Scythia-Siberian animal style. All articles - badges, psalm, pendants, belt splitters - were made of wood and decorated with the gold foil on the right side. The images imprinted on accessories of harness, included deer, elk, birds, mountain sheep and goats, cats of prey which are representatives of the local fauna. But a special place in the art of ancient nomads occupied the fantastic images, polymorphic creatures, fictional animals that have never been found in nature. These creatures called griffins combined in themselves the attributes of different animals. The image of animal fighting is one of the characteristics of the animal style. Semantics of torment scene interpreted as a struggle between good and evil, light and dark beginning, as the rebirth to a new life as a symbol of perpetual motion and eternal struggle of opposites.
