Masterpiece

This Lamp stand with oil lamp is an archaeological piece of high value. The Salban Bihara, Mainamati in Comilla was an ancient Buddhist monastery (7th-8th Century). Where, monks lived, studied and prayed. It was the royal palace for the early Buddhist students. Students from various places come here for their meditation and religious learning. During their study period the students stay in the dormitory/cells around the temple. It can be guessed that, these baked pottery oil lamps used by the monks and students in their dormitory/cells. Furthermore, there is a folk tale on the name of Chittagong. Chatigrama is the ancient name of the Chittagong city while its present Bengali name is Chattagram. The name of Chatigram/ Chatigrama which derived from Chati means Oil Lamp. This antiquity of Lamp stand with oil lamp (Chati) may be similar oil Lamp which also locally used in the ancient Chittagong. It is the only 8th centuries’ earthen oil lamp collection in the CU Museum.

History of the Object
A Large quantity of baked pottery has been recovered from Mainamati excavations. The Lamp stands and oil lamps with saucer like bodies were also found in a Buddhist monastery (7th-8th Century) Salban Bihara, Mainamati, Comilla. This is through the courtesy of the department of Archaeology and Museum, Government of Bangladesh, that the CU Museum has in possession this antiquity from Mainamati as a long term Loan.
