Why this is a
Masterpiece

In case of a typical lacquered box with mother-of-pearl inlay, it was common to finish by painting only, but this box distinguishingly has an additional arabesque pattern decoration on four edges of the box. Also the four corners of the box are smoothly rounded off, and simple pattern with enough space makes the mother-of-pearl inlay look much more beautiful.

History of the Object
As a box which has a lid to cover, it was usually used by men and women of the upper classes to keep grooming tools and ornaments for their beard or hair. Loosely-woven hemp was applied on an unpainted wooden container made of linden tree, and then, ornamental mother-of-pearl was applied on its surface. The decoration of this box was made in the way of striking-and-scouring-method, which hits a bent mother-of-pearl pattern by a hammer to represent its crack as it is. Both peony in the buds and bloom are beautifully arranged, and its stems are represented by twisting two lines of cooper wires to show a peony arabesque pattern. As the board at the mouth of the lid is processed more thickly than the surface, it is sturdier and also looks stable.
