Why this is a
Masterpiece

On one of the most beautiful vessels in the Pre Columbian Peruvian collection, the rows of lizards are shown in alignments of alternating yellow and brown. The impression of a natural setting is emphasized by rows of flowers along with the lizards. Nazca artists based their imagery on things seen and experienced in the world around them. It was the task of the ceramicist to represent selected features of their environment. Before firing, fine Nasca vessels were burnished (polished) in order to create a smooth surface with a reflective sheen. The marvellous geometry of the vessel's shape, rhythmic pattern of the lizards, and dark outlines executed with fine brush work enhancing the contrast against the white background make this one of the masterpieces among the Pre Columbian collection of National Museum.

History of the Object
Like serpents and frogs, lizards also undoubtedly had associations with the earth or seasonal moisture in Nazca culture. Such Nazca ceramics were made in the South Coast region and are widely recognized as one of the most visually appealing and culturally informative of Peruvian tradition.
