History of the Object
Edo period 1864 (Bunkyû 4/Genji 1), 10th month. Artist: Toyohara Kunichika (Japanese, 1835–1900), Publisher: Gusokuya Kahei (Japanese). Blockcutter: Matsushima Masakichi (Hori Masa) (Japanese). Vertical ôban diptych, left part. Play: Futatsu Chôchô Iro no Dekiaki (双蝶色成曙). Theater: Morita,1864. The composition of the engraving is typical for later portraits of Kunichika. Nakamura Shikan IV is depicted in a dramatic pose - mie. Nakamura Shikan IV (四代目中村芝翫) - a famous actor of the Edo period. He was born in Osaka in 1831. His father had a bearing upon the theater, so Nakamura Shikan started his career at an early age. He was acting under different names during his lifetime, and only at the age of 29 he took the name Nakamura Shikan IV.
