Why this is a
Masterpiece

Civil officials wore dark blue robes, which, depending on their rank, were decorated with nine, eight or five dragons arranged symetrically among stylized clouds. The image of the dragon on the robe referred directly to the Emperor, the Son of Heaven, and symbolized his authority. Towards the end of the Qing Dynasty, dragon robes also began to be worn by wealthy people not holding any official offices, Catholic missionaries and other foreigners. Typical elements of this period were monochromatic outfits, whose dark background were decorated with ornaments which were woven and embroidered with a white or golden thread.

History of the Object
This men's garment, called a dragon robe, constitutes part of a traditional semi-formal ji fu outfit in the Manchu style. Wearing such clothing befitted the Emperor, his immediate family and representatives of the clerical class, hence its numerous types. The members of the imperial administration, called mandarins by the Europeans, wore dragon robes while performing their official duties.
