Why this is a
Masterpiece

The figure of a boy sitting on a dragon refers to a legend about the carp which, while swimming up the Yellow River, traverses the waterfall called the Dragon's Gate and turnsinto this mythical beast. This legend directly refers to the hardships of learning crowned with a successfully passed clerical examination. The image of a child with a carp or with a transformed dragon and a lotus is also a symbol of prosperity and wealth. It was a frequent theme of the Chinese New Year images (nianhua) and small objects offered as gifts.

History of the Object
During the sculptural processing of this snuff bottle decoration, the artisan used the natural dark brown inclusion, which suggested the shape of the figural presentation, extracted from the light background.
