This intricately designed ivory object in the shape of an abacus (suanpan), which was carried on a cord around the belt, delighted the owner with its aestetics and simultaneously fulfilled two practical functions: it served as a toggle and a device for computation.

History of the Object
Toggels are decorative knobs, which serve the purpose of holding the ends of a cordu sed to carry small personal itemsaround the waist, such as different kinds of pouches, boxes, cases for medicines, tobacco, pipes, chopsticks, etc.
