Why this is a
Masterpiece

The fan was made in the Southern China style with a clear indication of the Cantonese workshop method, which was charakterized by precise, meticulous development of openwork details. Owing to the mastery of their craft, manufacturers from this region of China were called "artist weaving with ivory thread".

History of the Object
Fans played a significiant role in Chinese culture. Used since antiquity by both men and womaen, they were avilable in many varietes based on the function they fulfilled, their shape and the nature of their decoration. Apart from their functional qualites, fans constituted important ceremonial accessories. In the Tang Dynasty (618-907), they also became a medium for paintersand calligraphers. Fans were made of precious materials such as wood of fragrant trees, Livistona chinesis palm leaves, bamboo, lacquer, ivory, tortoiseshell or metal decorated with filigree and cloisonne, silk or bird feathers.
