Why this is a
Masterpiece

The insignia used by Ottoman sultans included the tughra, a decorative monogram containing the name of the given sultan, that of his father (and, occasionally, also of his grandfather), and the formula el-Muzaffer daima (always victorious). The present brooch includes an embellished rendition of the text Abdülhamid Han bin Abdülmecid el-Muzaffer daima (Abdülhamid Khan, son of Abdülmecid, always victorious).

History of the Object
According to an account by the owner, the brooch originally decorated the lid of a cigarette holder. Accessories of this sort were often made in Europe with an eye to the Turkish market.
