History of the Object
The bodhisattva is shown in a regal pose common in Chinese art from the 10th Century. The bird resting on her head, in all certainty a dove, symbolises fertility. This kind of imagery showing Guanyin on a lion originated in India. Adopted in Chinese artistic iconography, it appeared in varied stylisation.
