Why this is a
Masterpiece

In quality, the model was Chinese porcelain, rather than Egyptian ceramics. In decoration, however, an independent style was developed. The thin-walled bowls with a decoration of blue stripes on white ground were revolutionary, formally and technically. It was the first time that the contrast of blue-and-white was employed as a stylistic means; also, firing technique was developed far enough so that the cobalt blue – applied before the glazing – stayed put and unfolded its full luminosity.

History of the Object
Situated at the foot of the Kuhrud Mountains south of the pilgrim city of Qom, Kashan had a long tradition of ceramic production, particularly for building decoration – tiles and calligraphic friezes were among the main export articles. Cobalt blue from Kashan was not only exported worldwide, but also had been used for the glazing of relief ceramics and tiles since the early 12th century. In the early 14th century a type of thin-walled white ceramics was developed here, which was coated with a glazing of the same material as the vessel body.
