Why this is a
Masterpiece

The bombing of Tokyo in the Second World War destroyed the area completely. In 1878 a hall was pulled down because of disrepair; the fragments in the MAK Collection—the sole preserved remains of the tombs of Shiba—very probably derive from this memorial shrine.

History of the Object
The most remarkable objects in the Heinrich Siebold Collection are parts of a memorial shrine from the tomb of the Tokugawa family surrounding the Zojo-ji temple in the district of Shiba in Edo/Tokyo. The monumental complex was one of the three large tombs of the Tokugawa shoguns located in Nikko, north of Edo, in Shiba and Ueno, both in Edo. The Zojo-ji was already chosen to be the family temple of the Tokugawa as early as 1590; six shoguns and their families were entombed here until the early 19th century. During the Meiji Period (1868–1912) the complex was opened to the public and at once elevated to the rank of a national monument.
