Why this is a
Masterpiece

Akagi's style is characterized by functionality and aesthetic tradition. Together with the artists’ circle surrounding Kado Isaburo, he is one of the leading exponents of the renewal in Japanese lacquerwork. The initial inspiration for the works derives from simple historical lacquerwork such as was long used in temples, and they are additionally influenced by the local tradition of lacquerwork in Wajima, transposed with secure aesthetic sensibility into the modernist idiom.

History of the Object
After studying philosophy, Akito Akagi came in contact with the artist Kado Isaburo (1940–2005), who encouraged him to go to Wajima and concentrate on the art of lacquerwork. Here in 1994, Akagi opened his own workshop for lacquerwork.
