Why this is a
Masterpiece

The celebration of the festival dedicated to Durga bears the name of Durga Puja and culminates in a procession that leads the image to the waters of a river or pond, where it will be submerged in a ceremony called Vijaya. This event represents the impermanence of these images. Thus an object with these features, rescued from the waters, makes it an exceptional piece.

History of the Object
Each year in India, during the months of September or October, concurrent with the harvest, many festivities dedicated to the Goddess Durga are celebrated. For this reason, these types of images and others of a larger size are made. They represent the Goddess accompanied by her four sons, each one symbolizing a caste of the population: Ganesh, the Shudras; Lakshmi, the Vaishyas; Karttikeya, the Kshatryas; and Saraswati, the Brahmans. The whole ensemble stages the legend related to Durga and the buffalo demon Mahisa, who is captured and killed by the Goddess with the help of her mount, the lion.
