Why this is a
Masterpiece

When the first bronze objects surfaced in the antique markets of Europe in the late 1920s, they caused a sensation. The experts were confronted with hitherto unknown artefacts dating from the Bronze and Iron Ages. The shape and decoration of the beaker reveal that the bronze worker had absorbed various cultural influences: the shape of the vessel was widespread both in Iran and Mesopotamia, while the iconography is based on Babylonian models.

History of the Object
Bronze objects like this nipple-footed beaker come from Luristan, a mountainous region in the west of modern-day Iran. The beaker was made about three thousand years ago and depicts a prince enthroned, drinking wine in front of a table loaded with pomegranates and other fruit.
