Why this is a
Masterpiece

Important historical document.

History of the Object
Rijcklof van Goens had a long career in the service of the VOC. He was Governor General of the Dutch East Indies in the years 1678-1680 and for eight years he was Governor General of Ceylon. He married the widow of a lieutenant, three years older than himself, on September 13, 1640. Mementos like this, also in the form of a plate with text, were given to friends and family of the deceased.
