Why this is a
Masterpiece

The painting executes a primordial quality. The subject matter appears to be a ceremonial chariot heading for the precincts of a temple at Angkor preceded by some pilgrims walking in front. In the background are the ruins of Angkor.

History of the Object
Yeh Chi Wei was greatly influenced by ancient Chinese stone carvings and the calligraphy on bronze and bone wares. From these sources he created his own original and distinctive type of paintings. Yeh was committed to liberating local art from its academic and traditional mould. He travelled around Southeast Asian countries sourcing for indigenous subject matter which he painted in his own con-conformist style. He had taught art in Singapore for eighteen years. Founder of Ten Men Group, a founding member of the Society of South-east Asian artists, this late artist studied at the Shanghai Art Academy and was an art educator.
