Why this is a
Masterpiece

The figure of Guanyin intrigues because it is not very typical. It combines the so-called Royal Ease pose with a new iconographic style of Avalokiteśwara in the female form. But the arrangement of Guanyin's hands, especially the left hand which touches her cheek, brings to mind effigies of Pensive Bodhisattva, a figure derived from Indian art although it was also very popular in Chinese sculpture during the 5th and 6th centuries.

History of the Object
This object derived from a large collection of the famous Polish collector Tadeusz Wierzejski (1892 – 1974). He was a historian of art and an antiquarian. Wierzejski gave the sculpture of Guanyin to the District Museum in 1968.
