Why this is a
Masterpiece

This magnificent tray of beaten brass incised and inlaid with silver is one of only five known surviving objects made for the household of Badr ad-Din Lulu who ruled Mosul from 1233-1259. It is considered to be the piece of the highest quality among this group of artwork. Extraordinary and meaningful are the figural representations set into medallions and showing scenes with an astrological and courtly background

History of the Object
This tray was part of the loot taken from the Turks at Ofen in 1686 by the Elector of Bavaria, Max Emmanuel. Since then it belonged to the dynastic treasure of the Wittelsbacher, the rulers of Bavaria. It was originally made in Mosul in northern Mesopotamia during the reign of Badr ad-Din Lulu, then Atabeg in Mosul. Now the tray is on permanent display in the Museum of Ethnology, Munich.
