Why this is a
Masterpiece

The painting depicts 19 immortals on their way to attend a feast of Xiwangmu, the Fairy Queen of the West, in her legendary peach orchard. They are crossing the waters in three groups, but the background has been reduced so that the figures rendered with a powerful and confident brush stand out. The many folds of their robes flutter about, suggesting the presence of wind and adding to the vitality of the overall realistic effect. Most of these figures, including Laozi, who is depicted leading the third group of travelers on the back of a single-horned ox, are from ancient Chinese Daoist tales. It is designated as Korean National Treasure No. 139.

History of the Object
Gim Hong-Do, who is widely known by his sobriquet Danwon, was famous for his paintings of Daoist figures during the early years of his career. A great majority of these works were painted before his forties, and this enormous eight-panel piece is the earliest.
