Why this is a
Masterpiece

The strength of Chua’s practice is revealed in the anatomical detail in this painting. The hunched over postures of the figures are well executed, the sinewy limbs and lean muscles of the old Samsui women are accentuated to highlight their many years of physical labour, and at the same time evocative of the strength of their quiet dignity.

History of the Object
Samsui Women is a composite of photographs which Chua took of different workers. In reality, the Samsui women were working on different parts of a front lawn during the development of a piece of private property. While executing this painting the artist had witnessed a Samsui woman injure herself with a hoe, and this left a deep impression in the artist’s mind.
