Portrait of a Kabuki actor

Why this is a
Masterpiece

Portraits of Kabuki actors comprise an entire world in the history of Japanese graphic art. This specific work is significant in two aspects: it is undeniably masterful and emotionally impressive, as well a typical avatar of tradition. The swift movement and gesticulation seen in the work attest to the actor’s temperament and the artist’s ability to infuse the composition with dynamism, without exceeding the boundaries of a traditional depiction.

History of the Object
Toyohara Kunichika was one of the masters of the later period of ukiyo-e art, and the final leader of the Utagava school.
