Why this is a
Masterpiece

Because of its documented value, the fragility of the material, and the fine state of preservation, we consider this piece exceptional among the museum’s collections.

History of the Object
This type of votive plaque used to be located on the foundations of Burmese pagodas and were made from cast imprints in clay. Sometimes the imprints were so deep that they were converted into small devotional altars. This practice must have originated in Bodhgaya (India), where thousands have been found. Their location extends to Pagan and other enclaves in Burma. The represented themes are related to the life of Buddha. On the back, a dedication appears inscribed in the native language, although it is not likely to have the name of the person who made the offering.
