Why this is a
Masterpiece

This bronze you (wine vessel) has ridges on four sides of the body and lid, with handles on the front and back ridges. Relief carvings of animals’ faces can be seen on the lid and belly, each with projecting eyes and brows. The two faces on the lid are turned towards the two sides, while the two on the belly of the container face the front and back; all four faces are looking away from their twin. Dragon patterns cover the edge of the lid, the neck of the vessel and the foot ring, while six cicada patterns adorn the lid knob. The handle is also embellished with dragon and cicada patterns, ending in cow head carvings. An inscription of the emblem of a slave owner family can be found on the inside of the lid. With numerous detailed decorations, this solid vessel is typical of wares found in the central plains during the Shang and Zhou periods, and has significance in helping historians periodize Chinese history and deepen knowledge of cultural communication between central plains and the southwest.

History of the Object
Casting and usage of bronze wares is an imperative sign of hierarchical society, and what is known as the bronze age of archeology that is equivalent to the slave society in the field of history. Ancient Yue people of modern day Guangxi had already imported Shang style bronze items from the central plains during the Shang Dynasty. This bronze you with beast facial decorations and handle from the Shang Dynasty is not only a practical container of wine but was also an important part of rituals. Animal faces, cicadas and other decorations reflect the attitudes towards sovereignty, state and class consciousness of the people back then.
