Why this is a
Masterpiece

The thick skirt spread out to the sides like a fishtail and slender face exhibit the influence of the Northern Wei Dynasty of China. Its faint smile, voluminous robes, thick lotus pedestal, and dynamic aureole with flame design, however, are characteristic of Goguryeo Buddhist sculpture. The excavation site of the sculpture, which is Uiryeong, Gyeongsangnam-do Province, once the territory of Silla at the time of its creation, suggests possibility of its Silla origin, however, the inscription at the back of the sculpture clarified its provenance as a Goguryeo artwork. This provides concrete evidence that the place of excavation is not necessarily the place of production. This is designated as the Korean National Treasure No. 119.

History of the Object
This statuette is the oldest extant Buddhist image among those that can be positively dated. According to the inscription on the back of aureole, it is the 29th image of Thousand Buddhas distributed by the Dongsa Temple in Pyeongyang, Goguryeo around 539.
