History of the Object
Jean Carl excavation, 1937 (French Archaeological Delegation in Afghanistan). Buddhist foundation in the Ghorband valley. A courtyard with a stupa of modest size, onto which chapels adorned with unbaked clay decoration opened. This Devata filled niche D, to the right of the Bodhisattva that formed the main image, effecting the transition between the back wall and that on the left where the “Buddha with three-cornered cloak”, now in Paris, stood.
