Why this is a
Masterpiece

Big fragments from ancient textiles are quite rare, and more so when they are of such high quality and of such a complex weaving technique. It is also very interesting because it mingles middle-eastern motifs (winged lions) with Chinese ones (dragons).

History of the Object
The complex technique as well as the stylistic motifs would lead one to think that this textile was woven in Persia after the Mongol conquest. It is probably a nasij, or nasici according to Marco Polo: gold-woven costumes used at the Yaun Court. It belonged to the Association pour l’Etude et la Documentation des Textiles d’Asie (Paris), before being given to the Guimet Museum. It was exhibited for the first time in 2004 for the Lumières de soie, Soieries tissées d’or de la collection Riboud show.
