An exceptional old Hmong Lenh woman's dress from Bac HA, Vietnam. Reverse appliqué decoration technique is especially fine.
History of the Object
This costume was probably made and collected for the Colonial Exhibition. It was given to the Musée de l'Homme in 1931. The largest part of the Asian collection of the musée du quai Branly comes from the Musée de l'Homme. Since 1997, new acquisitions were made by the musée du quai Branly.
Très rare costume ancien des femmes Hmong Lenh de Bac Ha. Le décor de reverse appliqué est particulièrement fin.

Function
Originally coming from southern China, the Hmong settled in the mountains of northern Vietnam in the late nineteenth century. Cloth is made by the women. Girls begin to sew and embroider with their mothers at a very young age. This costume was worn for work in everyday life.
